Pixar’s “Inside Out 2”—the top-grossing movie of 2024—continues to break records: In its eleventh weekend in theaters it became the first animated movie ever to gross more than $1 billion at the international box office alone, multiple outlets reported.

Of the 11 other films that have passed $1 billion at the international box office alone, all—including Disney’s 2019 “The Lion King”—are live action. The studio ruled “The Lion King” was a live-action movie rather than computer-generated, which makes “Inside Out 2” the only animated film to be on the list.

At the domestic box office, “Wolverine & Deadpool” returned to the no. 1 spot with $18.3 million in U.S. sales this weekend, after it was dethroned by “Alien: Romulus,” which took the second spot this weekend with $16.2 million.

“Inside Out 2” has been a summer hit for Disney and helped revive the box office in recent months. The sequel to the 2015 hit follows the same main character, Riley, as she goes through puberty and deals with new emotions like anxiety and embarrassment. In July, the film, which is also streaming now in addition to being in theaters, became Pixar’s highest-grossing movie and the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, passing “Frozen II” ($1.45 billion), “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($1.36 billion) and “Frozen” ($1.29 billion).
